Trainee Electrician – Water Infrastructure

We are currently seeking a Trainee Electrician to join our Mt Wellington–based Water business unit, working on critical water and wastewater infrastructure that supports Auckland’s communities.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start a long‑term career in the electrical trade within a safetyfocused, high‑performing team. We are looking for someone who brings a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a genuine willingness to learn.

About the role

You will work under the guidance of experienced electricians, supporting the installation, maintenance, and servicing of electrical systems across live water and wastewater assets.

Your role will include:

  • Completing required electrical theory, workshop-based assessments, on-the-job learning, and ITO paperwork toward electrical trade qualifications and registration.
  • Identifying and working on electrical systems associated with water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Using plant, tools, and equipment safely in an electrical and operational environment.
  • Assisting with inspections and determining the condition of electrical installations.
  • Understanding and applying EWRB safe working practices at all times.
  • Developing basic work plans for construction and servicing activities.
  • Carrying out work to a high standard of installation and workmanship.
  • Working safely and effectively with your peers on active, operational sites.
  • Taking personal responsibility for the care, availability, and safe operation of tools, plant, and equipment.
  • Understanding and applying company health, safety, and wellbeing requirements, including taking reasonable care for your own safety and that of others.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will bring the right attitude as well as the right foundations:

  • NCEA Level 1 or equivalent, with English and Mathematics at Level 1 or equivalent.
  • A genuine interest in the electrical trade and working on critical infrastructure.
  • A positive, can‑do attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn.
  • An understanding of the importance of safety and following procedures in high‑risk environments.
  • Electrical Trade Certificate is an advantage but not essential.
  • Previous experience or aptitude for outdoor and site-based work.
  • Flexibility to work intermittent or extended hours when required to support operational needs.
  • Able to work well within a team environment while taking responsibility for your own tasks.
